Radio
In London, you can listen to many radio stations. Some of them cover the whole city, whereas others cover a smaller part of London.
UK radio stations are funded by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) or are independent. There are 5 BBC national stations that cover London and offer a diverse range of programmes (discussion, entertainment, music and news).
The UK’s number 1 Hit Music Station is Capital FM.
There are radio stations that are as well in France like Virgin Radio.
There are also a large number of unlicensed radio stations: The Pirate Radio Stations! These are playing musical styles like House, UK Garage, Grime, DnB, Reggae, and numerous “Old Skool” genres.
A bit of History
The Pirate Radio Stations became widespread in the early 1960s in northern Europe. Those offshore stations broadcasted from international waters
The first British pirate radio station was Radio Caroline. In 1964, Radio Caroline started broadcasting from a ship, Nowadays the station is land-based (I think I will watch the film “The Boat That Rocked” soon again…)
Also there was a station broadcasted in London but prohibited in France… In fact in 1940, the BBC opened its studio to the first members of the resistance who fled France's occupation by Germany. The station named Radio London appealed to the French to rise up, and was used to send coded messages to the French Resistance.
Television
There are many channels but I watch only two of them… In fact I have a bad television reception! So it is BBC for the news and Channel 4 for my entertainment. (The big bang theory, how I met your mother) Something great: there are the English subtitles!
The newspapers
The most known London newspaper is the Evening Standard. The articles are about news, business, sport, showbiz and entertainment.
For the UK newspaper, The Guardian is globally known and publishes international news.
The Times publishes world news and opinions. There are also The Independent and The Telegraph (news, business, sport, comment, lifestyle and culture)
To finish for the gossip there is The Sun (news, sport, showbiz and celebrities)

A Londres, on peut écouter nombre de stations. Certaines couvrent la ville entière, d’autres juste une partie de la ville.

Un peu d’Histoire
Au début des années 60 les radios pirates ont connu un premier et grand essor en Europe du nord. Ces stations « offshore » diffusaient depuis les eaux internationales
La première radio pirate britannique est Radio Caroline. En 1964, Radio Caroline commença à diffuser depuis un bateau. Aujourd’hui la station est basée sur terre. (J’ai bien envie de revoir le film « Good morning england »)
Une radio diffusant à Londres mais interdite en France a vu le jour en 1940… En effet la BBC a ouvert ses studios aux premiers membres de la résistance ayant fuit l’occupation allemande. La station, Radio Londres, incitait les français à se soulever et à résister et était utilisée pour envoyer des messages codés à la résistance française.
Télévision
Il existe beaucoup de chaines mais je n’en regarde que deux… J’ai une très mauvaise réception! Pour les nouvelles je regarde la BBC et pour mon divertissement Channel 4 (The big bang theory, how I met your mother) Ce qui est génial : les sous-titres en anglais !
Les journaux
Le plus connu des journaux londoniens est The Evening Standard. Les articles sont sur les nouvelles, l’économie, le sport, le showbiz et le divertissement.
